God Does Not Exist?

Millions of people the world over have diverse beliefs and cultural systems. Religions exist out of the core belief that there is a higher power than men. Even so, not everyone believes that there is a spirit world out here, and you can’t compel people to believe in what, to them, does not seem real or is an illusion according to their understanding of life. Which is okay.

I think humanity should be an entity that upholds respect, regardless of whether one confesses to a faith or not. We have free will and it makes no sense to deem one group as better than another simply because one feels it is spiritually elite out of the fact that the people in it have a strong faith in a god. What good is there even to kill a fellow human in the name of religion or force someone to accept a faith he has not personally been convicted to? It beats logic and only makes it evident that some of us are slaves to what we claim to believe in. Spiritual ethnocentrism isn’t such safe practice.

I came to learn that somehow the fool does not fathom that he is one regardless of what he claims to stand for. The wise one stands for noble things; that includes respecting life and other people’s choices. I believe in God. I am a Christian. The God I believe in is a humble God. He brings himself down to letting me choose the sort of life I want to live. He humbles Himself to forgive me of my transgressions since I am in total depravity without His presence in my life. One more thing, He chose me before I could choose Him. That is, to me, the biggest act of love. And it compels me not to boast over anything; be it my knowledge of the world and its systems, my education or skill of art. All of it is vanity if I trust myself than I trust Him.

The vastness of this world amazes me. I wonder how one could possibly not believe in the existence of a higher being. I however have much respect to anyone who does not acknowledge the existence of God because none of us on this earth was born believing so. We all have learned to through our different experiences. It would utterly be barbaric to condemn people simply because they do not share the same faith with me. But I do question myself quite often, is there not black magic? Doesn’t witchcraft exist? If yes, what does it represent?

Don’t we find ourselves feeling things that are above human understanding – some spirit world of some sort? Oh well, turns out it could just be me. I might as well be accused of living an illusion and someone will write down a well woven write up to prove to me how mythical the book of Genesis is. (1 cor 2:14-16) Here’s what I know – nothing godly makes sense without FAITH. (Hebrews 11:6)

Many people around the world believe in a religion that did not originate from where they come from. It shouldn’t be a big deal though some people use that as blackmail. The world shares its cultures and norms. I doubt if there is one particular people who are too unique as to own beliefs that do not connect them to people outside their realms. In African traditional societies, communities had places which they went to worship. Meaning that all through, God has manifested Himself in His people. It’s foolish to reason this way, maybe, but it makes sense to me.

There is so much about the past that we cannot fully explain first because we were not there. It is however very important to understand history so as to be certain about what to believe and what not to. However, we also ought to keep in mind that not all history we come across should easily be regarded as true. Some of it is distorted for certain purposes. We must be able to bring ourselves to question our hearts again and again as to why we choose to take the roads we do.

But you know, I figured out you can never really learn anything if your best shot at life is looking for loopholes around everything you do not believe in. When we become mature people, we decide which paths to follow. There is always that personal walk we all have to take regardless of how close we are to our environment. It’s impossible to fully explain my faith in God as it is equally impossible for someone to convince me that God does not exist. We come from different schools of thought and that discussion or argument as some would prefer to call it, will never come to substantial fruition.

It’s okay not to believe in a higher being. We need each other as human beings, regardless, and should not hesitate to grasp any platforms that make us feel connected. But before you disregard the Bible, read the whole of it. That does not mean that Christians should shun non-Christians and vice versa. We are human beings before anything else. I love what James 1:26-27 says,

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this; to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

The text above does not narrow down the sort of orphans and widows we ought to take care of. It does not specify their religions, race or culture but their humane nature and circumstances. We are simply called to love one another as God has loved us. Lest anyone who claims to be a believer be cheated that out of the fact that he declares his belief in God or in Christ, then that makes him good. That would be foolish. Our wisdom is foolishness in God’s sight as cited in 1 Corinthians 3:18-20;

Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a ”fool” so that he may become wise.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: ”He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, ”The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

And Christ himself made a point when a certain ruler called him good. He said,

”Why do you call me good?”…”No one is good–except God alone” – Luke 18:19, Mark 10:18

The ideology of the existence of God need not be an argument. It solves no problems, neither does it add any wisdom to anyone. If you are at a place where you doubt God’s existence, it’s okay. If you believe that God exists, live like it. Can we move on with life now? Yes, we should.

I leave you in the hands of an American poet who pieced these wonderful words back in 1913. Enjoy.

TREES
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
