Kenya, My Mother Tongue

Was independence the end of political fights?

Democracy languishes in her infancy

You lie enslaved by tribal illiteracy

Rotten plights

Yearning to kill in the street

For people who care about you not one bit

Woe unto you who walks with a soul unlit

Your poverty is the advantage of the elite

How is it

That Kenya is full of educated fools

To whom peace is poison

And not soul food

I pity the future

Kenya, my mother tongue

You love laughing with the vulture

Who takes your votes for vouchers

You cannot buy dignity!

Kenya, my mother tongue

While the people bask in selling their heritage

Splendour forever remains a distant dream

Neighbour is family

Parliament does not know

The stench of your stove’s steam

I will see you armed with machetes

Chanting in hot anger brims

Yet inside you burn with low self esteem

True strength is peaceful

Let the innocent ones live!!

Let them live!

Your tribal cocoons breed death

There is no fruit

Taking away someone’s God given breath

Tomorrow’s day awaits

You shall live in poor health

Kenya, my mother tongue

You’re looking for sorrow

You abuse your flag

Your patriotism so hollow

Yet, you demand honour and respect

Impure hearts are impune

Wait until God shows you real neglect

Tell me how it tastes

The day it reaches your tongue, mate!

Jamhuri is no piece of paper

Where you scribble your dirt in delight

Jamhuri is my home

More than this poem I recite

Jamhuri is my future

To protect it I will fight

Not by wiping away a tribe

Nor looting the streets armed with knives

But by voting the light

I love Kenya

She is my might

So if you don’t want peace for us

Find somewhere else to dance with your ego!!!
